3/17/2023 0 Comments When was the microwave invented![]() The results led engineers to attempt to contain the microwaves in a safe enclosure, the microwave oven. After they successfully popped, Spencer tried heating more foods. He attributed it to the microwaves and, like any good scientist, conducted more tests.įirst, Spencer tried corn kernels. While working with the device, Spencer noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket started melting. It was only by chance – and after the war had ended – that one scientist finally noticed one of the magnetron’s other possible uses. Raytheon scientists looked for new ways to improve the magnetron and increase productivity during a time of great need.Ĭooking a TV dinner was not on their to-do lists. It allowed for easier detection of enemy planes and ships, especially German U-Boats. Several years prior to Raytheon’s first attempt at the microwave oven, a scientist, Percy Spencer, experimented with a new magnetron, a vacuum tube that releases energy to power radar equipment. The first microwave, the Radarange, built by Raytheon Corporation in 1947, was based on the accidental discovery of a melted chocolate bar. We soon learned that boiling too little water in the cup resulted in exploding bubbles of steam that sprayed hot water all over the inside of Perry Spencer's invention. It started out more than five feet tall, weighed 750 pounds, and cost about $5,000. The boiling stopped within seconds after the microwave door was opened, so my wife Minnie offered to open the door while I quickly took photos. The nearby photograph shows a cup of water that reached the boiling point after being heated in a microwave oven for about 21/2 minutes. 24, 1950, the delay possibly being attributed to the earlier discoveries he cited. But his method was far more efficient and faster, since it employed microwaves. Spencer's patent application stated that others had also used radio waves to heat food. Spencer's patent began with, “My present invention relates to the treatment of foodstuffs, and more particularly to the cooking thereof through the use of electromagnetic energy.” ![]() 8, 1945, Spencer applied for a patent that he titled “Method of Treating Foodstuffs.” This led to a series of simple experiments that proved that food could be heated and even cooked using microwaves. Spencer learned about the heating ability of microwaves after a candy bar in his pocket melted while he was standing near a microwave-emitting electronic device called a magnetron. In a conventional oven, considerable heat is wasted in heating the oven itself and the surrounding air when the goal is to heat only the food inside. The energy in the microwaves is then converted into heat. Most food contains considerable liquid water, and that explains why the microwaves bouncing around inside a microwave oven are quickly absorbed by any food inside. ![]() That's why satellite TV signals can be difficult to receive during wet conditions. The heating efficiency of a microwave oven is due to the fact that water strongly absorbs microwaves.
